SHILLONG, Dec 11: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Meghalaya is unlikely to field candidates in all the 60 seats for the upcoming 2023 Assembly polls.
A senior TMC leader told The Shillong Times on Sunday that the party targets at least 50 Assembly seats.
“But it will depend on whether we get good candidates. We would not want to put up candidates just for the sake of it. Our candidate should give a tough fight to those of the rival political parties,” he said, declining to be named.
He said the winnability factor is the main criterion for the allotment of the party ticket and most political parties would find it hard to put up candidates in all 60 seats.
Going by the trend, the National People’s Party and Congress will not be able to field candidates in all the seats. The same would be the case with the United Democratic Party, which lacks presence in the Garo Hills, he added.
He said the TMC would release its first list of candidates for the polls before Christmas.
“Currently, we are all busy with the three-day visit of West Bengal Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee who is scheduled to arrive here on Monday,” he said.
Banerjee is scheduled to land at the Umroi Airport at 2 pm.
The TMC supremo, who will be accompanied by party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, will address a TMC workers’ convention at the State Central Library here on Tuesday and participate in a pre-Christmas celebration thereafter.
