SHILLONG, Dec 29: The BJP’s Meghalaya unit has decided to lodge a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India, through their lawyer, against the TMC’s Meghalaya Financial Inclusion for Women Empowerment (MFI WE) scheme in which the party intends to provide assured monthly income support of Rs 1,000 per woman per household per month in the state.
Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, BJP State president Ernest Mawrie said that there is no mention of the reason as to why this scheme is required and added that the scheme is nothing more than an attempt to exert influence on voters.
“There is also no mention of how the TMC proposes to raise the funds for the scheme,” he said.
According to Mawrie, such scheme should be seen as corrupt practice under the sections of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, as the intent of the scheme is nothing more but to bribe the voters.
Terming it a failed scheme in West Bengal, Mawrie accused the TMC of making false promises since they do not have any issue of development agenda and hence they have come up with the WW Card.
Mawrie said part 8 of the Model Code of Conduct states that the election manifesto of any political party needs to adhere to certain guidelines.
It may be mentioned that within two weeks of its launch, the Meghalaya TMC’s flagship initiative “WE Card” has received over one lakh registrations from women in the state.
The Meghalaya Financial Inclusion for Women Empowerment Scheme (MFI WE), more popularly called “WE Card”, was launched by TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee here on December 13.
The party has promised to roll out the benefits under “WE Card” one its government is installed in Meghalaya.
