UMROI: The Umroi airport expansion project has received a jolt as the land owners have decided not to part with their land protesting the state government’s failure to release the compensation money.

The decision to this effect was taken in a meeting held on Tuesday among the representatives of the Umden Mission Dorbar Shnong , the Seng Samla Umden Pyllun and the land owners.

The land owners even decided to start cultivation in their land.

The State Government had taken over land of over 200 people residing within Umroi for the expansion of the Airport four years back. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) had released the compensation money of Rs. 11.44 crore to the state government for the payment of compensation to the affected land owners but the state government has failed to do so till date.

The meeting, held at Umden Mission Dorbar Hall, was attended by the representatives of the Dorbar including Umden Mission Rangbah Shnong D. Nongdhar, Chairman of the Dorbar B Syiem, president of the Seng Samla Umden Pyllun G. Pyrtuh and the land owners.

The meeting felt that the state government took things for granted and was showing no interest in paying compensation to the affected land owners.

“Several representations were submitted to the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary Transport pertaining to this issue, but nothing has been done so far”, Pyrtuh said. He also stated that though the state government had taken possession of the land for expansion of the airport but as revealed by some officials that the Revenue Department had not issued the necessary clearance to the state government that led to the delay in releasing the compensation package.
