SHILLONG: Meghalaya College Teachers Association (MCTA) has praised Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma for releasing college teachers’ pending arrears amounting to Rs 47 crore.

“He (Dr Sangma) is a man who sticks to his words. On April 5 last, he made an assurance that he would release the pending arrears of the college teachers within the first quarter of this fiscal year,” MCTA president Dr BH Buam said on Thursday.

She said that within two months time, the Chief Minister has fulfilled his assurance by issuing a directive to the Education department. Dr Buam however said that the association was still awaiting an official notification on the release of the pending arrears.

The State Government has agreed to pay 20 per cent of the arrears, which was the State’s share, while the remaining was to be borne by the Centre.
