NONGSTOIN, Jan 11: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) along with the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday distributed pamphlets containing warnings against the adverse effects of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Act in Meghalaya.
The pamphlets were distributed among the public in Nongstoin town to generate awareness about the MMDR Act standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the grant of a prospective licence and mining lease for coal in Meghalaya.
Speaking to media persons, HYC president Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh said the HYC and some other pressure groups, under the banner of Save Hynniewtrep Mission, will protest against the decision taken by the NPP-led MDA government to implement the MMDR Act in Meghalaya.
He further alleged that the SOPs under the MMDR Act only allow the rich to continue coal mining activities in Meghalaya and the licence will be given to those who have less than 100 hectares of land.
