SHILLONG, Jan 11: The charred remains of two children, who were reported missing after Tuesday’s incident of fire at Mawbah, were recovered on Wednesday.
The Forensic unit recovered the charred remains. It declared that the remains were that of the two children, who were aged less than 10 years.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Raghavendra Kumar MG also confirmed it. Later, the autopsy was carried out in the presence of a magistrate and the bodies were handed over.
Expressing grief over the incident, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said necessary help will be provided to the affected families.
The locals are in a state of shock. Some residents of the building, which was engulfed, told reporters that nobody had any idea the two minors were stuck there.
Two women said they ran away from the site as soon as the fire engulfed the makeshift houses above the building.
“We were down the building when the fire broke out. There was no indication that the two kids were stuck in the house,” one of them said.
The locals and some members of the United Democratic Party (UDP) were among those who had carried out the rescue operation.
