SHILLONG, Jan 20: The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has warned vehicle owners against retrofit exhaust system in vehicles, while underlining the discomfort caused to the general public by the noise pollution.
In a statement issued by the Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Vikash Kumar, the traffic police noted that there has been a rise in the number of vehicles, two-wheelers and four wheelers, which are retrofitted with loud exhaust pipes causing noise pollution in the city, especially at unearthly hours.
This, the SP (Traffic) said, is in violation of Section 182A(4)/190(2) of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, while it also causes inconvenience to residents of the city, including children and senior citizens.
“The vehicle riders have modified the noise mufflers/silencers so much so that a vehicle being driven can be heard hundreds of meters away whereby causing immense discomfort to the old, aged and infirm persons as well as the young children and other persons who may require silence,” the STP said.
The police have asked owners of such vehicles to remove the retrofit exhaust pipes and replace them with the stock ones, while asserting that violators will be penalised as per the provision of law.
