Scholars, writers promote culture preservation at seminar in Tura

TURA, Feb 27: Eminent scholars and writers besides students of NEHU Tura Campus and some colleges from Tura attended a national seminar on ‘Language, Literature and Culture’ organized by the A•chik Literature Society, Tura, in collaboration with the Department of Garo, NEHU Tura Campus, which concluded with a valedictory function at the NEHU premises here.
Chief guest of the programme, Prof Sujata Gurudev, campus-in-charge of NEHU Tura Campus, in her address, outlined the importance of preserving the culture, literature and language of any community. “The A•chik Literature Society is laying the foundation of the preservation of Garo culture, literature and academic aspect of the A∙chik literature. It is extremely important to preserve our culture, language and traditions. It is our very life. We are dead without our culture, literature and language. It is very important to note that, now in the world today, every part of the globe is focused on preservation of the culture and identity of all groups of humanity. One should be immensely proud of one’s culture.”
Giribala G Momin, vice-president of A•chik Literature Society said that language, literature and culture are the core areas where the A•chik Literature Society lays emphasis to widen its activities.
Learning about languages, literature and culture will enable us to empower ourselves to explore and expand our community, she said, adding that these three areas are the entities that function together and are co-related with one another in advancing human values and traditions.
At the seminar among the paper presenters were Dr Faguna Barmahalia, Department of Bodo, Gauhati Universtiy, eminent Garo writers and researchers Dr Tharsush K Sangma from Damra, Assam, Kroshnil D Sangma from Williamnagar, Chenggan A Sangma from Tura, and folklorist and musician from Rombagre village Dewal M Sangma.
Meanwhile, the society, in collaboration with Department of Garo, NEHU Tura Campus, also celebrated International Mother Language Day recently.
