Shillong, March 3: After getting a fractured mandate in which the National People’s Party (NPP) led by Conrad Sangma was able to bag 26 seats emerging as the single largest party in Meghalaya, the leader today staked claim to form the government.

Interestingly, the honeymoon of NPP-BJP came to an end before the Meghalaya assembly elections but soon after when both the parties found that power could be achieved only by remaining together, they have joined hands again.

Conrad Sangma has the support of 29 MLAs including two from BJP and one independent. He needs support from others to garner a majority.
The response of UDP, HSPDP and PDF who have a combined strength of 15 will be crucial.  TMC, INC and VPP have a strength of 14.

Surprisingly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a rally in February had claimed that the Meghalaya was the most corrupt state in the country and appealed to the voters to vote for BJP for development in the state.

Conrad Sangma was for the first time elected as a member of legislative assembly (MLA) in 2008. Thanking BJP, Sangma Tweeted, “Thank you @BJP4Meghalaya for reaching out to the NPP and for extending your support to our party to form the Government. We will continue to work together to serve Meghalaya and its people”.
