SHILLONG: In order to give a facelift to the city, the State Urban Affairs Department is planning to beautify the Fire Brigade, Laitumkhrah and Motphran junctions here.
A review meeting, attended by senior officials from Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), for expanding and beautifying the junctions was held at the Secretariat recently.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh expressed happiness over the fact that the land owners have decided to part with their land paving the way for improving the Fire Brigade junction.
The beautification of the junctions is also expected to ease congestion in the concerned areas.
She informed that the State Government has also started the land acquisition process for beautifying the Laitumkhrah junction, an area which is always congested.
The Urban Affairs department is also taking assistance from the Home Minister and local legislator of Mawkhar, Roshan Warjri, for giving a facelift to the Motphran junction.
“The land where the monument (war memorial in memory of Khasi porters) stands at Motphran belongs to the Government. We have proposed that the monument be shifted to a place exactly opposite to its present location which is more suitable for it,” Ampareen said adding that it would help in clearing congestion.
