SHILLONG, March 23: Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar on Thursday implored upon Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to ensure that developmental projects, which are implemented by the Meghalaya Government along the border villages, are not being stopped by Assam.
“I want our CM to intervene in order to stop the high-handedness of Assam Government by stopping projects implemented by the state government in the border villages,” the Congress MLA said, while raising this issue during the Question Hour on the fourth day of the Budget session.
He also urged the state government to provide a copy of the agreement which signed with the Assam Government for the smooth implementation of the developmental programmes in the disputed areas.
According to him, the headman of the disputed villages can use the agreement as a proof when the officials from Assam would try to stop the implementation of the developmental projects.
Meanwhile, in his reply, the chief minister asked Marngar to provide information on the instances about Assam government stopping Meghalaya government’s projects.
“We will ensure that these kinds of problems are resolved at the earliest. We will intervene accordingly and I will request the Congress MLA to give it in writing so that we can take up the matter immediately with our Assam counterparts,” the chief minister said.
Maintaining that developmental works are imperative to better the lives of border residents, Conrad continued, “It is for this reason why we have been continuously following up with Assam government whenever there have been situations where complaint has come regarding some work being stopped. The communication between the current dispensation in Meghalaya and Assam is very strong.”
