Noted EGH teacher no more
WILLIAMNAGAR, April 10: Ahsan Habib, the first principal of Rongrenggre Higher Secondary School in East Garo Hills and a revered teacher in the region, passed away recently. He was 83. Born on July 17, 1939, at Mangaldai village in Assam, Habib, following his graduation, worked as the headmaster of the Adokgre High School during which time he also married Gomoline A Momin. Habib worked as a headmaster at Adokgre from 1968 to 1970 and later served as the headmaster of Rongrenggre High School, one of the oldest schools in Williamnagar. In 1995, he was conferred with the best teacher award in East Garo Hills. He later went on to win the award for the best teacher in the state in 1996. He was transferred as the headmaster to Mallangkona Higher Secondary School in 1997, where he worked till his retirement on March 31, 1999. In 2012, he continued to work part time as an assistant teacher at Williamnagar Night Secondary School. He was then promoted to the post of the headmaster of the same school in 2002 and served in the same capacity till 2021. In recognition of his service towards education, he was honoured as an outstanding teacher on September 5, 2021, by the SBI Regional Manager. He had also functioned as a member of the governing body of Ramsang College, Williamnagar College, Williamnagar Civil Hospital Management Society and Jawaharlal Navodaya Vidyalaya. On Wednesday last week, Habib complained of health issues and was on Friday taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Tura for better treatment. He, however, breathed his last on the same day. He was buried with all honours in Williamnagar with the PHE minister and Williamnagar MLA, Marcuise Marak, also expressing his grief on Habib’s demise.
BSF seizes betel nuts in EJH
SHILLONG, April 10: The Border Security Force (BSF) has intercepted an Assam-bound civil bus and seized a huge quantity of Burmese betel nuts worth Rs 12 lakh from the Umkiang area of East Jaintia Hills, an official statement said on Monday. Four persons were apprehended, including the driver and co-driver, in connection with the incident after failing to produce valid documents. The incident took place on April 9 in which the 172 Battalion of the BSF Meghalaya seized the Betel nuts, acting on a specific input. “The apprehended persons revealed that they were coming from Tripura and consignment was being taken to ISBT Guwahati,” the statement said. The arrested persons and seized items were handed over to the police station Umkiang for further legal action. Further investigation into the incident is under way. (ANI)
