 NONGSTOIN: The 1st Anniversary of the South West Khasi Hills District was celebrated in a befitting manner on Saturday at Mawkyrwat District Head Quarter with various programmes organised in the District. The day began with the football exhibition match between Royal Wahingdoh and Mawkyrwat XI in the morning where Mawkyrwat XI defeated Royal Wahingdoh 2-1.

In the afternoon, the Statue of U Sngap Syiem erected at Circuit House premises was unveiled by the Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh who is also the local MLA of Mawkyrwat Constituency in the presence of SC Marak MLA who is also the chairman of the State Planning Board and a host of officials.

In the evening at the DC Office Complex, the colourful cultural programme were presented by the Seng Khasi Nonglang, Khun Biria u Maram (KBUM) Sap Kyrpang u Maram (SKUM) and Salonsar which reflected the richness of District cultural mosaic and was witnessed by the Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh as the chief guest, MM Danggo MLA and the Chairman of the State Planning Board S C Marak as the guests of honour.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at the huge gathering, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that the intention of the Government to create the Districts was to bring developments to every nook and corner for the people of the State.

He also underscored that effort was being taken to tap the potential resources in the State so that the people could get the benefit out of it.

Other highlights of the day were distribution of awards to persons who excelled in the field of sports, academics, social work, acts of courage and bravery, presentation of mementoes, prizes distribution, releasing of souvenir and Mini Fete cum food festival with varieties of local cuisine which was followed by Musical evening. The weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation programme was also launched during the District Day celebration.
