NONGSTOIN: A Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising of NGOs including the KSU, Synjuk ki Nongshynshar Shnong Ri, Shallang Area Local Labourers Association, Lyngngam Indigenous Federation and the All Lyngngam and Garo Association organised a public meeting at Shallang market area on Wednesday to discuss the issue of influx in Shallang area.
The meeting, attended by hundreds of local residents, took strong note of the entry of non-indigenous people in the area and urged the people to refrain from giving a free hand to the non-indigenous people in the use of resources meant for the local people.
The NGO leaders urged the people not to give their quarries on rent to non- tribal people. The meeting also decided that if the non- tribal businessmen wish to trade in coal, they would have to purchase coal from depots and not from quarries directly.
The speakers at the meeting urged the Khasi and Garo women of the area to refrain from getting married to non- tribals since the non- tribals were actually ‘marrying the resources’ and not the person.
