SHILLONG: The Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CORP) has threatened to agitate over the State Government’s decision to appoint Pooja Pandey as the new Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District.
The CORP on Wednesday submitted memoranda to the private secretaries of both the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary.
The memoranda expressed the desire of CORP and other NGOs for a tribal Deputy Commissioner to be appointed in the district who should also be an able administrator so as to tackle the long-pending border dispute which is the bone of contention between Meghalaya and Assam.
“It is not prejudice or gender discrimination but it is the need of the hour to have a tribal Deputy Commissioner who would have better understanding of the traditional laws, customs and usages of the tribal people living in the border areas,” the memoranda stated.
They also stated that a tribal DC would be in a position to cooperate with the tribal officers keeping in mind the communication problems that may arise due to language barrier.
“If Pooja Pandey is appointed as the new Deputy Commissioner, we would be left with no other option but to agitate. The Government should own up responsibility if any untoward incident occurs due to such agitation,” they threatened.
