SHILLONG: Aiming to revive enthusiasm in the Independence Day celebrations unlike previous years when bandh calls and similar impositions have hampered the celebrations, Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma on Tuesday made a fervent call to the people to come out in large numbers and participate in the line-up of events scheduled on August 15.

The Chief Minister’s appeal comes in the wake of a routine bandh call in boycott of the Independence Day celebration by as many as eleven militant outfits including the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

He said that the district administration has been sensitized on the security aspects and review meetings were being held at the level of the Chief Secretary and the Director General of police to ensure peaceful celebrations.

“People should come out and participate in the celebrations in a befitting manner,” the Chief Minister told reporters while recalling past times when the celebrations saw better participation of people even in village areas.

According to Dr. Sangma, special programmes would be organized in all the districts including the capital city for which the State Government has sanctioned extra funds this year.

“It is through our Independence that we have been given a platform to demonstrate democratically,” Dr. Sangma said while recalling the sacrifices made by the great leaders of the country to attain Independence.
