SHILLONG, May 20: Shillong Medical College continues to hang fire despite numerous push from different quarters for the project to materialise.
The idea of state’s own medical college was conceived in 2010-11, but a decade later, Shillong Medical College continues to be on paper, while the Tura Medical College is also far from completion.
The civil works of the Tura Medical College is expected to be completed by June-July next year.
The progress of Shillong and Tura medical college projects have been so slow that even the Regional Cancer Centre, Medial College and Nursing College in NEIGRIHMS, which started way back in 2017-18, is nearing completion and that after withstanding the onslaught of COVID-19.
The foundation stone for the Shillong Medical College was laid at Reid Chest (TB) Hospital in Jhalupara but the government decided to relocate the proposed college and hospital to Umsawli.
Later, the state government cancelled its agreement with Kolkata-based Kali Pradip Chaudhuri (KPC) Group, which was entrusted with constructing and running the college. There are fresh talks about constructing the college in New Shillong Township.
NEIGRIHMS, a premiere institute, is already located in Mawdiandiang.
While the Meghalaya government continues to be in planning mode, the Assam government has taken long strides developing several medical colleges apart from AIIMS to boast about.
