SHILLONG, May 25: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Thursday admitted to the need of having medical colleges and hospitals in Meghalaya.
Addressing the first convocation ceremony of the Woodland Institute of Nursing here, the health minister, while stating that Assam has 11 medical colleges, said, “I did ask the Chief Minister of Assam what his magic mantra is and how did he manage to do that. He told me you just have to convert your existing systems into institutions where doctors can have hands-on learning experiences, nurses, who are already in the system, can join hands, and we can have these much-awaited medical institutions.”
Lyngdoh said the state government will soon make use of the facilities of Ganesh Das Hospital and other hospitals to ensure that they conform to the medical requirements for the start of a medical college.
Airing concern, she also revealed that after assuming charge as the health minister, she has in the last two months received at least 20 requests from nurses, seeking transfer of services.
Informing that the state government will soon prepare a policy for the services of nurses, she also questioned how Meghalaya could have a robust health system if the nurses would want to only serve in the state capital.
It may be mentioned that a total of 166 students graduated during the first convocation ceremony of the Woodland Institute of Nursing.
