NONGSTOIN: The KSU (West Khasi Hills) led by its organising secretary, John Milton Wahlang, KSU Mawshynrut Circle led by its president Sranly Rongrin, KSU Nongstoin Circle led by its president Davis Goldfield Wanniang, KSU Plangrin Area Unit led by its president Biangboy Sangriang and 50 of its members on Saturday inspected the Shakambari Ferro Alloy Pvt Ltd at Rwiang, West Khasi Hills District.
The inspection comes after the KSU Khranglin Area Unit had earlier issued a 10 day deadline to the labourers to have in their possession valid papers to establish their identity. They were also asked to have labour license within these 10 days.
However, when the student bodies attempted to check the papers of the labourers, the vice president of the Company, Subhash Chandra Mahanta intervened and halted the inspection.
Infuriated the student union leaders forcefully asked the labourers to gather and produce their papers. They found that 50 of them did not possess any papers to establish their identity or even their nationality while 26 of them had their papers under process.
Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police G D Gharwanlang and EAC H Warjri also arrived at the scene. Mahanta allegedly told them that the members of the student bodies had assaulted the labourers and the engineers
H Warjri then told the students that he would send the Labour Inspector to the plant to check the papers of the workers on Monday and that action would be taken against those found without them.
