SHILLONG: Dr Satish Trehan, an international consultant by profession, supporting the nationwide campaign against amendment of RTI said that if the act is amended from its present form, it will be a huge setback.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Trehan said that in order to remain free of corruption, all political parties should be transparent and answerable to the public. This would not happen if the RTI Act is modified.

“We need to showcase that the country is against the proposed dilution of RTI Act. If thousands sign the nationwide petition, the Government will know that there is growing public support and that they cannot ignore this demand of the voters,” said Trehan who was in Shillong recently and part of the German Environmental team that tied-up with the state government.

The non-amendment of the RTI Act campaign also has the backing of renowned social activist like Aruna Roy and others as they are in the process of garnering at least 25,000 signatures before delivering the same to the Prime Minister, the Cabinet Ministers and media houses.
