Shillong, June 19: In a significant development, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a notorious terrorist of Khalistani movement, died in a shooting incident that took place in Surrey, a city in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Notorious for his involvement in a series of violent acts and subversive activities, Nijjar had been previously labeled a ‘wanted terrorist’ by the Indian government. This recent event follows the inclusion of Nijjar’s name on a list of 40 other designated terrorists, released by the Indian government.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had taken action against Nijjar in 2022, offering a reward of Rs 10 lakh for his capture, after he was accused of conspiring to assassinate a Hindu priest in Jalandhar, Punjab. The plot to kill the priest was purportedly devised by the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), an organization for which Nijjar held the position of chief. Operating from his base in Canada, Nijjar played a prominent role within the KTF.

Moreover, Nijjar had previously faced charges filed by the NIA in connection with a case involving the conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism against India. These charges highlighted his alleged involvement in planning and coordinating acts of terror.

The targeted shooting in Surrey has sparked widespread attention due to Nijjar’s notoriety and the international implications surrounding the Khalistani movement. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the complex challenges posed by extremism and the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism globally.
