NONGSTOIN: The night road blockade called jointly by pressure groups including the HANM, HPSO, WYWC and the WPM kicked-off on Thursday at 7 pm with stray incidents of arson being reported from parts of West Khasi Hills District.

Tyres were torched at various junctions and streets throughout the district. The streets wore a desolate look and vehicles stayed off road. Incidents of stone pelting were also reported within Nongstoin town.

The vehicle (Bolero) of S Diengdoh, Additional District Magistrate, West Khasi Hills, was damaged by agitators in Nongstoin due to stone pelting. However, the ADM miraculously escaped unhurt.

HANM president Arphul Kharbani, while speaking to pressmen announced that the road blockade would continue on Friday from 7 pm till 5 am on Saturday.

He also asserted that if the Government continues to remain silent on the demands of the DSC-passed candidates, the HANM would resort to fresh agitation.

Meanwhile, on the fourth day of the indefinite hunger strike called by the Association of West Khasi Hills DSC Passed 2010 in Nongstoin two more hunger strikers were admitted at the Nongstoin Civil Hospital.

Smti Wanda Marwein of Tiehsaw, the general secretary of the Association, and Smti Dihun Wanniang of Siejlieh were declared by the doctors to be in critical condition from severe dehydration and low blood pressure.

Surprisingly, the Health department did not have an ambulance at their disposal and the agitators had to be shifted to the hospital in a local taxi.

On Thursday, Mawshynrut legislator Witting Mawsor met the hunger strikers and informed them about his meeting with the Chief Secretary at Shillong. However, the agitators ignored his appeal for calling off their hunger strike.
