Shillong, June 22: It’s not even a year since the P A Sangma Sports Complex was inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in honour of his late father. This morning the wall of the complex on the roadside collapsed, damaging property and putting lives in danger. During the construction there were complaints from the public on the shoddy work, but the NPP dismissed it blaming the opposition of doing politics. Now the collapse of the wall proves otherwise.

It’s unfortunate and regrettable that the stadium costing Rs 127.7 crore was constructed in such a confined space in the centre of the town, risking lives and property, and without any vehicle parking space. The government should have considered the potential hazards before building it.

Last year a 70 tonne dome (under construction) of the of the Rs 177.7-crore building of the Meghalaya Assembly collapsed. Before that, we had witnessed bridges sank  and the ISBT building cracked and leaked after the inauguration. No action was taken against ministers, engineers & contractors.

Look at the condition of the Chandmary playground in Tura, the turf was layed on a concrete floor, which poses a risk to players, without proper or no drainage system, it’s flooded, go and see.
