Shillong, July 9: Despite the introduction of 5G services in India in October 2022, widespread availability is still lacking, leading to inconsistent network coverage, according to a report. Counterpoint Research also highlighted a lack of awareness about 5G use cases and a limited selection of affordable 5G handsets priced at Rs 10,000 and below, which could potentially delay mass adoption of 5G in the country.
Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint, noted that there is still a long way to go in terms of network coverage. However, the increasing number of 5G smartphones in the market and their growing popularity indicate a promising future for India’s 5G ecosystem.
As per IANS, in May 2023, India achieved a significant milestone as 5G smartphone sales surpassed 100 million units for the first time, surpassing monthly shipments of 4G smartphones, according to Counterpoint data. Notably, there has been a rising demand for 5G smartphones in the lower price segments, particularly those priced below Rs 20,000. In 2021, 5G smartphones accounted for only 4% of sales in this price range, but the figure rose to 14% in 2022.
Shilpi Jain, a senior analyst, highlighted that 5G penetration will continue to increase with multiple launches and high demand for 5G phones, especially ahead of the upcoming festive season. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are also recognizing this trend and launching 5G phones in the Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 range, further accelerating 5G adoption.
While network coverage challenges and limited awareness persist, the growing availability and affordability of 5G smartphones indicate a positive trajectory for 5G adoption in India.
