Shillong, July 14: Normal life in Delhi has been severely disrupted as the rising waters of the Yamuna River have inundated homes, markets, roads, tourist spots, and even the seat of power. The flood-like situation has led authorities to close schools and colleges in the capital until July 16.
Although the water level of the Yamuna has stabilized and started receding on Thursday night, it is still dangerously close to the danger mark, according to a senior official from the Central Water Commission.
Adding to the concerns, a regulator of the Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department has been damaged, causing the Yamuna water to flow back towards the city. The Delhi government stated that officials and a large number of workers are working to reinforce the area surrounding the damaged regulator in order to prevent further inflow of floodwater into the city. Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj is overseeing these efforts.
India Today reported that the India Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for Delhi and the surrounding areas on Friday, with a forecast of light drizzle that could intensify within the next 24 hours. A stronger spell of rain could worsen the situation in the already submerged capital. Moderate rain or thundershowers are predicted for Saturday.
