MAWKYRWAT, July 28: Acing on complaints, KSU South West Khasi Hills unit on Friday moved the Deputy Commissioner of the district seeking ban on sale of a certain edible jelly sold in plastic syringes citing health hazards.
After receiving several complaints from parents from across the district about the possible dangers posed by the edible jelly to children, secretary of the Education Cell of the union, Episcopal Lyngdoh, wrote to the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, T Lyngwa, seeking an immediate ban on the sale of the product.
The union pointed out that the product which is popular amongst schoolchildren does not bear the Fruit Products Order (FPO) mark as per the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 or any other indications to verify that it is safe for consumption.
The union has urged the DC to ban the sale of the sweet as they suspect that the jelly in the syringes is linked with unwanted ingredients.
