SHILLONG: Over one lakh students across the State were Wednesday affected by a strike called by school and college teachers under the banner of Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Associations of Meghalaya (JACATAM) protesting the government’s unresponsive and “adamant attitude” toward their demands.
The JACATAM on Wednesday kicked off its second phase of agitations with three-day strike.
The teachers have been agitating since August 21, seeking an audience with Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Education Prof RC Laloo to discuss reforms in the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE), regular payment of salaries to teachers and provincialisation of schools.
When asked about the statement of the Education minister that his door is open for talks, JACATAM chairman ED Nongsiang said, “We are happy if his door is open and this is what we want.” He also said that Government was putting pressure on them to call off agitation.
