Shillong, Sep 1: Sankardev College Disaster Management Committee, the NSS and NCC units and the Economics Department have organised a two-day training programme on disaster management on August 29 and 30. The programme was organised in collaboration with District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI), Government of Meghalaya and Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS).
The Resource Persons for the training programme were Mrs. Malvoreen Langstieh, Assistant Director and Assistant Professor of Disaster Management Cell, MATI, P. Lymba, DDMO, East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi, P. Deb, Chief Trainer and Organiser, IRCS Shillong, MGR, Shabong, Co-Ordinator IRCS, Alberth Ch. Nongrang, IRCS, I. Swer, IRCS, T. Wahlang, Search and Rescue volunteer-cum-training assistant with their team members Euginia M. Kriam, Steffenysha Kharnaior, Iarisha Kharbhoi, Darihun Dkhar and Iarisha Lyngdoh.
P. Deb with Alberth Ch. Nongrang, with their team members trained the students on life saving techniques such as first aid to be applied for injuries, rescue method in drowning and fire burns, method of giving CPR and recovery, snake bite, search and rescue techniques and many other methods to enhance the skill and confidence of students in helping casualties during disasters.
The programme was chaired by Shaikupar Kharshiing, Convener and Assistant Professor in the Economics Department while Stive ZR Marak, Convener NCC Unit delivered the welcome address.
On the second day, M. Langstieh deliberated on different types of disasters. The presentation focused mostly on earthquakes as the state of Meghalaya falls under the Level-5 zone area. She explained the safety measures and techniques to be adopted if such a situation arises. This was followed by a mock drill, where participants demonstrated search and rescue methods which they learned in the training programme.
