SHILLONG, Sep 4: Several programmes and initiatives of the Meghalaya government have failed to match the hype.
A few years ago, the Conrad K Sangma-led government had announced the ‘Meghalaya Cabinet on the Move’, which entailed visits by the ministers to the district headquarters for holding Cabinet meetings.
Jowai and Tura hosted a Cabinet meeting once each. Thereafter, the meetings have been confined to the Secretariat in the state capital.
Similarly, the chief minister started walking to work. He walked to the Secretariat from his official home at Polo with an entourage to make a statement on ‘fit Meghalaya’.
The ‘walk to work on Wednesdays’ lasted about a couple of weeks.
The ‘My city, my heritage’ campaign, which sought to underline the importance of cultural heritage and heritage walks, also did not last long.
The last such heritage walk was organised on a Sunday in April by IndiGoReach, the CSR arm of IndiGo and InterGlobe Foundation.
Recently, on the occasion of National Sports Day, many state government officers either walked or cycled to the office. There are speculations that this could be a one-off initiative.
