NONGPOH, Sep 7: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Byrnihat Police Outpost successfully intercepted a drug smuggling attempt on Wednesday night, leading to the detention of one individual and the seizure of a significant quantity of suspected heroin with a street value of approximately Rs 1.3 crore.
The operation began around 9:51 pm on Wednesday when the Byrnihat Police Outpost received crucial telephonic information indicating that an individual by the name of Rahul was transporting a consignment of narcotics from Guwahati to Shillong.
Responding swiftly to the tip-off, police officers and personnel from the Byrnihat Outpost immediately initiated a naka checking operation along National Highway-6, situated opposite the outpost.
At approximately 11:30 pm, their diligence paid off as the suspect, identified as Rahul Nazary, was detained. He was accompanied by a tourist vehicle (ML 05 T 6149).
Upon questioning, Rahul admitted to carrying 10 boxes of heroin with the intention of delivering them in Shillong. To ensure transparency and adherence to legal procedures, a search was conducted in the presence of a gazetted officer and independent witnesses. Subsequently, 10 soap boxes containing suspected heroin were recovered from a sling bag in Rahul’s possession.
Rahul Nazary, son of Kamal Nazary, and a resident of Happy Valley under Madanriting Police Station in East Khasi Hills, was subjected to a medical examination as part of the legal process and later placed in lockup for further formalities.
The seized consignment of suspected heroin, after being weighed, was found to have a net weight of 135.64 grams. Its estimated street value is approximately Rs 1.3 crore, making it a significant victory in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, LR Bishnoi, took to X (formerly Twitter) earlier on Thursday to applaud the efforts of the Ri-Bhoi Police in successfully intercepting a significant narcotics haul and apprehending an interstate drug trafficker.
In his tweet, the DGP commended the operation’s precision and well-planned execution by stating, “Another haul of narcotics! In a precise execution of well-planned ops @RibhoiPolice nabbed one interstate drug trafficker & seized Heroin worth Rs 1.3 crore. Kudos to the team. We @MeghalayaPolice remain fully committed to disrupt the network of traffickers.”
