Social Welfare Dept organises workshop on child rights and development
SHILLONG: Foreseeing the need to dwell upon the issue of child rights, and the necessity for developing laws and acts for the protection of children, the Social Welfare Department on Monday organized a one-day workshop on Child Rights and Development at Yojana Bhavan Auditorium here.
The workshop was inaugurated by Social Welfare Minister, Deborah Ch. Marak in the presence of Social Welfare officials including Principal Secretary PW Ingty, Commissioner and Secretary T Dkhar and Director HM Shangpliang.
Commending the efforts taken by the Departments to ensure that child rights are well protected, Marak, in her inaugural address, said that from time to time the Department has held round table discussions to monitor the various projects pertaining to child rights and development and also to study the impact of these projects on the children.
Stating that Centrally-sponsored projects like the ICPS and the ICDS continue to have a positive effect on the health of children, the Minister expressed hope that all such schemes would be implemented in the right earnest by the State Government.
Marak called upon the officials of the Department to work hard especially in areas relating to improving literacy among children as this would enable them to overcome the cycle of poverty.
She also expressed hope that the suggestions and resolution adopted at the workshop will inspire and strengthen the Department’s resolve to work for the best interests of the children.
Principal Secretary In charge of Social Welfare Department, PW Ingty, said that it is essential to understand the needs of the children and also called for coordinated efforts for the development of the children and to ensure that their rights as enshrined in the Constitution are followed and protected.
Senior officials from the Social Welfare Department attended the workshop.
