SHILLONG, Sep 16: Anti-influx mechanism Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), which has been hanging fire for nearly a decade, remains in a limbo after Centre’s apparent refusal to clear the legislation in its current form.
After Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed the state Assembly on Friday that the Bill was returned by the Centre with certain remarks, UDP on Saturday sought clarity from the government in writing.
It is recalled that Sangma declined to divulge the comments of the government of India.
“Very welcoming indeed if the chief minister (Conrad K Sangma) has said there is a response from the Centre with regards to the implementation of MRSSA. It will augur well for the state. We want to see it in black and white also,” UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said on Saturday.
“If we talk about the different organisations of the state, all of them are for MRSSA,” he said, backing the implementation of whatever is coming till Inner Line Permit (ILP) is implemented in the state.
He stressed on fine-tuning the different aspects relating to MRSSA.
“Even if you say MRSSA, there must be something that needs fine tuning, so let’s fine tune that and move forward. At least we have something to address the issue which has been pending for a long time,” Mawthoh said.
Sangma had on Friday said the state government received a response from the Centre on MRSSA and the government is examining how to move forward on the matter. He, however, did not reveal whether the response was positive or otherwise.
