Promises before elections
Guwahati: BJP president Rajnath Singh has promised time-bound action to check infiltration to the Northeastern States provided the BJP comes to power in the Centre in the next election.
The BJP president who was here for a two-day visit to meet the party’s core groups from all the Northeastern states to work out the election strategy for the next general election, raised alarm over the unabated infiltration to the region from Bangladesh that has triggered rapid alteration of the demography of the region.
He said the BJP would treat those who have sneaked into the country illegally from Bangladesh after 1971 as illegal migrants.
However, the Bengali-speaking Hindus who were forced to leave that country because of persecution would be dealt with sympathetically.
He also said that the party would take a stand on the movements for separate states in the region only after getting detail of the on-going negotiation between the agitating groups and the Centre. He, apparently remained non-committal on the issue of creating new states in the region.
Rajnath further said as on date the BJP was not confabulating on having alliance with any political party in the region and the State party units would be free to decide on number of seats to be contested during the next election. Regarding development fund for the region, the BJP chief said the party stood for non-lapsable status for the DoNER ministry fund that is pooled from different Central ministries.
