Agartala: Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar has rued over low representation of women in Tripura assembly while addressing a seminar on the transition of Tripura from princely rule to democratic governance in Tripura on Wednesday.
She said half of the population in India are women; in the present Lok Sabha have 61 women members which constitute only 11% of the total membership of the house but in case of 60 -members Tripura assembly it was only five counts only 8%. Kumar urged the political parties to ensure higher representation of women in governance in both assemblies and Parliament. She arrived on a three day visit as part of the celebration of Golden Jubilee of Tripura assembly, which was begun on July 1 last.
She however, appreciated 50 percent reservation of women in three-tire Panchayats, Nagar Panchayat and village committees under the ADC area of Tripura and added: “It is a matter of pride that Tripura has done this because representation in elected bodies leads to empowerment of women.” (UNI)
