SHILLONG, Sep 19: Senior TMC legislator and former CM, Mukul Sangma on Tuesday questioned the government on the status of drugs seized by the police.
“We would like to know the action taken on the drugs confiscated by the police from time to time,” Sangma said while raising the matter during question hour.
At the same time, the former CM also stressed on the need to expedite filing of charge sheets in cases filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
He was critical of the fact that petty drug peddlers were being arrested but the kingpins running the drugs trade were getting away.
In his reply, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the drugs problem is not restricted  to the state and is a matter of concern at both national and international levels.
Tynsong said the state government has constituted a three-member Advisory Board with Justice (Retd) Shivaji Pandey as chairman to deal with habitual drug trafficking offenders.
He further informed that the drugs peddlers cannot be release easily since the advisory board is vested with the power of validating detention with up to two years of imprisonment.
