SHILLONG: Incidents of torching of Government and private vehicles and incinerating shops in East Khasi Hills district alone in the last few weeks has resulted in material loss to the tune of Rs 50 lakh.
Informing this here on Friday at a press conference, East Khasi Hill Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal asserted that the Government would be seeking compensation for all the damages accrued by filing litigation against the NGOs in the appropriate court of law.
“All the cases will be registered in the name of the organizations,” Goyal said, adding, “Arrest of the leaders is on the cards since most of the miscreants have been arrested red-handed.”
According to Goyal, the East Khasi Hills district police has, so far, registered more than fifty cases besides arresting over forty people.
“Now our focus is to prepare charge sheets in all the cases,” he said.
He pointed out that the Government can book the agitators under the MPDA when the ‘situation arises’.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner also condemned the recent attack on an ambulance in the city.
“They are attacking essential services and it is unprecedented since ambulances have never been attacked anywhere in the country,” Goyal said.
He stated that the police would be registering attempt of murder cases against such attacks on ambulances.
When asked if the district police required additional manpower, Goyal maintained that the district police have enough strength, but at the same time he admitted that additional forces have been sought in view of the upcoming festive season.
The Deputy Commissioner also appreciated the support of residents of various localities in the city who have been quick to inform police about suspicious movements in their locality.
