AGARTALA: Vice President Hamid Ansari is all set to inaugurate the State Museum, refurbished Ujjayanta Palace here on September 25 amidst controversy of naming.

The Indigenous National Party of Tripura (INPT), one of the major political parties, has already declared to boycott the historic occasion if the government doesn’t include Ujjayanta, a word deeply associated with the monarchy rule, with the State Museum.

“We have already written separate letters addressed to President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari making them aware about our reservation with the name of the museum”, said INPT general secretary Jagadish Debbarma.

The deletion of word- Ujjayanta which is deeply associated with the state’s ancient history is nothing but an attempt to wipe out the monarchy rulers and we will never accept such bid, he said.

The main opposition party- Congress seems furious over the naming of the State Museum. “We fervently urged the government to include the word Ujjayanta with the state museum considering the sentiment of the people. The government attempt is absolutely an insult to the people”, said TPCC president DC Hrangkhawl.

On Saturday, Tripura Students’ Federation (TSF), a student wing of INPT gave a memorandum to Governor Devananda Konwar seeking his intervention.

“We urge Governor to include the word Ujjayanta with the State Museum sensing the sentiment of people. Let’s what step he takes after our demand”, said Rajeshwar Debbarma, general secretary of Tripura Indigenous Youth Federation, a frontal organization of INPT.

Ansari is scheduled to arrive here on September 25 to inaugurate the State Museum here on September 25, an official release said.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, chairman of Lalit Kala Academy cum advisor of the state government – Dr. KK Chakraborty, Chief Secretary Dr. SK Panda and Information and Cultural Minister Bhanulal Saha would remain present in the programme.

After the inauguration programme, the guests would visit different galleries and photo exhibition.

Later, a special programme would be held at Town Hall where the Vice President and the Chief Minister are scheduled to address.
