TURA, Sep 24: Taking advantage of a spell of torrential downpour that hit the plains belt of Garo Hills on Saturday night, robbers broke into a temple in the border town of Hallidayganj under West Garo Hills and looted valuables and idols from within.
While there is speculation on the time when the incident took place, the matter was only known on Sunday morning when the priest visited the temple to discover the locks and the window broken.
Temple authorities said at least five idols that were within the temple premises were stolen along with a gold crown and ear rings, among other valuables. The donation box was also emptied. The total loss is estimated at about Rs 5 lakh.
Immediately after the theft was discovered, the Hallidayganj police station was informed following which an FIR was lodged.
“The miscreants made use of the very heavy rains last night and made away with idols and valuables. Further there was no security in the temple premises which possibly made things easy for them. We are looking into the matter,” informed a highly placed police official of West Garo Hills.
