Shillong, October 2: Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) has taken a significant step to address Mumbai’s growing power needs by commissioning the city’s first 400-KV grid line.

As per IANS, this achievement, through the Kharghar Vikhroli Transmission Ltd (KVTL), will enhance the existing transmission and distribution capacity, bringing an additional 1000MW of power to Mumbai.

The city has experienced two major grid failures in recent years, causing significant disruptions. The new Kharghar-Vikhroli line aims to prevent such incidents in the future, providing a reliable source of 1,000 MW of power. This 400 KV grid within Mumbai’s municipal limits will improve the city’s electricity import capability, enhancing overall reliability and stability.

The project, which had been in planning for over a decade, faced delays due to various factors, including competition among power suppliers to the city. It is crucial for Mumbai as the existing transmission capacity is insufficient to meet the city’s growing power demands. This development will not only support transportation systems like the bullet train and Metro Rail but also benefit commercial and residential establishments.

KVTL comprises approximately 74 circuit kilometers of 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines, along with a 1,500 MVA 400kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Vikhroli, the first of its kind in Mumbai. It boasts a compact design, minimizing space requirements, and overcame challenges like difficult terrain and height restrictions using innovative techniques.

Starting from Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, the KVTL project traverses urban areas and terminates at Vikhroli in Mumbai city. Another significant power line on the horizon is the upcoming Kudu-Aarey line, set to bring an additional 1000MW of power to Mumbai.

Presently, Mumbai’s rising power demands are met by AESL, Tata Power, BEST, and a small portion served by the MSEB, collectively serving millions of consumers in the city.
