Shillong, October 6: The Election Commission (EC) sources have indicated that the dates for the Assembly elections in five states, namely Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram, are likely to be announced between October 8 and 10.

As per a report in India Today, the polling is expected to take place between the second week of November and the first week of December.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, and Telangana are anticipated to have single-phase elections, similar to the previous elections in 2018. In contrast, Chhattisgarh is likely to see polling conducted in two phases, as it did in 2018.

It is worth noting that the polling dates for these five states may vary. However, the counting of votes will occur simultaneously in all five states between October 10 and 15.

The term of the legislative assembly in Mizoram is set to end on December 17 this year, with the Mizo National Front (MNF), an ally of the BJP, currently in power. The legislative assemblies in Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh have terms ending on different dates in January next year.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) led by K Chandrasekhar Rao governs Telangana, while the BJP holds power in Madhya Pradesh. Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan are under the governance of Congress-led governments.

Before announcing the election schedule for these five states, the EC has assessed the state of poll preparedness in Rajasthan, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh. A meeting of EC’s observers has been convened to finalize the strategy for ensuring a smooth and fair election process, with a focus on implementing the model code effectively and preventing the influence of money and muscle power.
