SHILLONG: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi has asserted that the arrested GHSMC volunteers can avail legal aid to obtain bail.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Bakshi informed that during his meeting with the parents and relatives of the arrested GHSMC volunteers, some of them had lamented that they were poor and ignorant of the laws and were not in a position to afford the expenditure for court matters in securing bail.

The Deputy Commissioner, who is also the Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, had explained to them that they can avail free legal aid made available to those who cannot afford the expenditure incurred in dealing with court cases.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner has taken a serious view of reports that some vested interests were preventing the arrested volunteers of GHSMC from seeking bail.

“It is a direct denial of a basic right by unlawful means and adds to the criminal conspiracy theory that some motivated vested interests are directing the entire chain of events and physically denying the arrested volunteers any chance of escape while the leaders cool their heels in the prison under more stringent sections of law,” the Deputy Commissioner said.
