SHILLONG: The State Government has dismissed rape-accused police official Nurul Islam from service.

The 46-year-old officer in-charge of Ampati police station, who has been charged with molesting and raping two minor sisters in March this year, has been on the run since the matter came to light.

Confirming this here on Wednesday, Director General of Police (DGP) Peter James Pyngrope Hanaman said that the official order in this regard was issued on Tuesday.

“We have taken this decision to terminate the service of Islam on the basis of charges leveled against him,” Hanaman said.

Probe into criminal charges levelled against the sub inspector would go on, he said.

He is wanted in connection with Ampati police station under section 376(2)(1-a) IPC and Sections 6 and 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

A court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.

Islam is the second police officer in Meghalaya to be dismissed from service for rape after sub-inspector SN Roy. Roy was sacked last month for his alleged involvement in the gang-rape of a 13-year-old school girl at a city hotel on March 17, 2011.

Islam allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in the police station March 13. On March 31, he raped the victim’s 17-year-old sister at gunpoint in their house. The sub-inspector had also reportedly threatened the victims with dire consequences after perpetrating the crimes.

Islam was picked up on June 1 on charges of rape and molestation. However, the officer in-charge of Ampati police station, reportedly, escaped from his house at Tura in West Garo Hills the next day.
