SHILLONG, Oct 16: The Khasi Authors’ Society has asked the state government to notify Khasi as one of the official languages of Meghalaya.
A delegation of KAS members met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday and raised the demand with him.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, KAS President, DRL Nonglait said English is the official language of the state while Khasi and Garo are associate official languages as per the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005.
Nonglait said the CM has asked the concerned department to look into the details of the Acts and provisions made under the Constitution and report back to him.
Apprising the CM of their recent conference and demonstrations in Delhi, the KAS requested him to write a follow up letter to the Union Home Minister urging him to introduce a bill in the next session of the Parliament for inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule.
The CM reportedly assured the KAS members that he would write both to the Home Minister and the Prime Minister next week.
