SHILLONG, Nov 11: The State BJP has condoled the demise of former Nagaland and Assam Governor, PB Acharya — the man said to be behind planting the lotus and strengthening its roots in Meghalaya.
“As we mourn the passing of former Nagaland and Assam Governor, our beloved PB Acharya Ji, it’s time for us to reflect upon and take inspiration from his life; a life that will always remain a story of grit, single-minded dedication to a cause and simplicity that motivated an entire team,” stated the State BJP in a statement issued here on Saturday.
Stating that late Acharya shared a close association with the Northeastern states throughout his political career spanning many decades, the BJP stated, “During his journey as ABVP in-charge of East Siang district (then Siang district) in the 1970’s to BJP in-charge of Meghalaya in end 1991, Acharya helped erect many a milestone for the party and strengthened the grass roots by motivating party workers with his sheer commitment, honesty and hard work”.
The State BJP recalled, “In 1992, he brought LK Advani, the then leader of opposition, to Meghalaya with the aim of motivating the party workers and spreading BJP’s message of unity in the state. He created the first BJP Meghalaya Pradesh State Executive Committee, unearthed local talents and helped build a strong worker base”.
“His endeavours saw BJP Meghalaya field its first Lok Sabha candidate — Moina Singh Phyllut —and BJP immediately established itself as a mainline party of repute in the state. In 1995, the central leadership of the party recognised Acharya’s hard work and made him in-charge of north eastern states. However, in spite of an increased work load, his commitment towards Meghalaya remained steadfast and his dedication saw the party win three Assembly elections for the first time in 1998,” it added.
It further added, “As the party continues to expand its base in Meghalaya, one can never forget the man who started it all –PB Acharya Ji; a friend, leader and family member who will always be missed”.
Meanwhile, Senior BJP leader and Cabinet Minister, AL Hek recalled his association with him. “During his time, he was my mentor who took me to BJP and also offered the ticket to me. I contested and during his time we won three seats in the state,” Hek said.
He said late Acharya was like a father figure to him, who really took his hands, taught and guided him in the world of politics.
A condolence meeting will be held at 3 pm at the State BJP office on Monday.
