NONGSTOIN: Incarcerated president of HANM West Khasi Hills District unit, Arphul Kharbani, has spoken out against the administration act of arresting him and Gabriel Sohlang, the finance secretary of the HANM district unit.

Arphul alleged that the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of West Khasi Hills District were working in tandem to tarnish the image of the HANM by falsely implicating their leaders and members in arson-related cases that have occurred in recent times in Nongstoin.

He claimed that the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police were conspiring against them as the HANM had earlier sought for the immediate removal of the Deputy Commissioner.

The duo was recently arrested for their alleged involvement in the torching of the offices of the PWD EE (Roads), the Meghalaya Khadi and Village Industries Board, the Fisheries Department and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department.

Arphul claimed that when the incidents had occurred in Nongstoin, both of them were in Bangalore and came to know of the incidents only after returning to Nongstoin.

He added that the police had kept them in their custody for seven days which was later extended by five more days. “After the custody term ended on Wednesday, it was again extended by another two days,” he added.
