SHILLONG: The inauguration of the newly-constructed Kolkata Meghalaya House is likely to be delayed as the State Government is still awaiting permission from the Kolkata Municipal Board (KMC) for construction of the sewerage system from the new building at Russell Street to the main sewerage system of Kolkata city.

“We have been assured that the permission would be given after the Puja festival. We would try to get back with the KMC to get the actual position on the permission to be granted to the State for construction of the sewerage system,” official sources informed here on Thursday.

According to official sources, the construction of the sewerage system would be completed within a two-week time.

Official sources, however, informed that the furnishing of the building would take some time.

“It is difficult to say when the furnishing work would be completed since it was initiated only a few days back,” official sources said.

When asked about the tentative deadline to inaugurate the project, official sources said, “We would like to inaugurate the project by the end this year. But there are possibilities that inauguration might take place only in the early part of next year due to the pending furnishing work and construction of the sewerage system.”

The project has hit several hurdles with the cost escalating from the initial Rs 22 crore to Rs 49.2 crore.

Earlier on August 5 last, the State Public Works Department (PWD) formally took over the newly-constructed building from M/s Asian Housing and Infrastructure Pvt. Limited (AHIPL).
