SHILLONG: The Centre has turned down the state government’s request for additional forces to tackle the pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) activists who have intensified their agitation.
An official of the State Government on Thursday informed The Shillong Times that the Centre has expressed its inability to send forces at the moment due to the upcoming elections in five states.
It may be mentioned that single-phase Assembly elections in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Mizoram, and two-phase polls
most of the security personnel would be deployed in these states for peaceful conduct of elections
With the law and order situation deteriorating with every passing day, the State Government is hoping against hope of getting additional forces from the Central government.
The official said that the Centre should realize the gravity of the situation in the state in the wake of growing militancy problem in the five districts of the Garo Hills region as well as ongoing pro-ILP agitation.
Referring to proscribed HNLC’s reported willingness to hold talks with government, the official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the administration was verifying the media reports.
