SHILLONG, Dec 23: Worsening condition of roads in the state capital, Shillong, has prompted the UDP to pick holes in the urban governance and administration even as it lamented that the machinery is not performing what is warranted form them.
“They (roads) are in a deplorable condition and this has caused a lot of inconvenience to commuters, making things very difficult. I do not understand why there is no initiative on the part of those who should be constructing or repairing the roads. Why is it not done? We cannot leave it like that,” said UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Saturday.
Lamenting that one will encounter many a pothole within the state’s capital, he said, “It is a bad reflection. When we talk about urban governance and administration, I think we are not doing well and it is sad”.
“There is a need, especially the road as it reflects the kind of development that is there. Now that the rainy season is over, the PWD has to take a more pro-active role here in repairing and constructing as well as paving the road,” he added.
Few stretches of the roads in the heart of the city are in bad shape, and while the citizens continue to cry foul, there has been no respite for commuters from the uncomfortable rides.
