Shillong, usually as quiet as a library after 9 PM, is breaking all the rules this festive season! The streets are party central until a whopping 12 AM—totally unheard of in this hilly town. Folks are rocking the streets with non-stop celebrations—dancing, music cranked up to 11 from car speakers!
The city’s traffic chaos, now begins early in the morning and continues to continue till midnight.
And therefore who’s there out not merry-making? Our unsung heroes, the traffic cops. These legends are out there to keep the streets in check.
While everyone’s hitting the dance floor, these traffic maestros are pulling overtime, working beyond their work hours. They knew what they signed up for, but do they deserve a round of applause for making sure the party people can keep on grooving without chaos on the roads! Obviously, and so do their families!
Selfie ground Khyndai Lad
Beware pedestrians when glaring too long at the lights which adorn the buildings in Police Bazar as you may stomp the feet of people brazenly stopping to take selfies on the road now chock-a-bloc with revellers.
This thoroughfare in Khyndai Lad, which is already congested, is now drawing hordes of people, both locals and tourists who want to experience Shillong and its glimmering lights. Compelled to take out their phones for pictures notwithstanding the queue of people, selfie buffs make it harder for other pedestrians to walk peacefully.
A person carrying cake in one hand and a bag in the other could be seen weaving his way through the way, although without much success.
A Shillongite, who entered into a conversation with an SJ team member while crossing the thoroughfare at Police Bazar, said he almost tumbled when an orange seller appeared out of nowhere amidst the crowd offering to sell the fruits.
