SHILLONG, Dec 29: Congress is going slow with its preparation for the upcoming elections to the KHADC and JHADC since the exercise of delimitation of constituencies is still on.
Talking to The Shillong Times, State Congress chief Vincent H Pala said that there is still confusion on whether the elections will be held as per the schedule with the delimitation of the constituencies.
“We had a series of meetings to discuss the district council elections. But majority are of the opinion that it will be better to wait till the delimitation exercise is complete,” Pala said.
He further said that the party is yet to invite applicants for the tickets.
“Many of the parties are yet to announce their party candidates for the district council elections. Therefore, I don’t feel that there is a need to rush,” the MPCC chief said.
Pala observed that even the candidates who are planning to contest are not in a rush.
“It looks like even the government is not keen to hold the elections immediately,” the MPCC chief said.
It may be mentioned that one Dominic Warjri had filed a petition questioning the “illegal action” of the KHADC’s Executive Committee (EC) in constituting the Delimitation Committee to determine the boundaries of the 29 constituencies under its jurisdiction.
Justice Wanlura Diengdoh heard a prayer made by K Paul, a senior counsel, who appeared for the petitioner seeking steps for issuance of notice to the respondents, including the KHADC and the state government.
“As prayed for, the same is allowed. Let notice be issued, the same is returnable within four weeks. List the matter after vacation,” Justice Diengdoh said in the order.
